Moxa has introduced families of Ethernet switches for industrial environments.

Spread across EDS-2000 and EDS-4000, they are being stocked in the UK by Impulse Embedded.

“The core difference between ranges is their manageability: EDS-4000 switches are managed, which provides a higher level of control, security and optimisation,” according to Impulse, “EDS-2000 switches are unmanaged, which means that these function out-of-the-box, the moment they’re plugged in.”

EDS-2000 devices have five or eight ports 5 or 8 ports, and offer options with SC/ST fibre ability (EDS-2008-EL) and Gigabit Eathernet in the EDS-G2000 series.

A quality-of-service feature is included. “Devices can assign priority to the traffic they are sending, and the unmanaged EDS-2000 switch can interpret and apply appropriate priority to the network packets being transmitted through the switch,” said Impulse.

‘Broadcast storm’ protection is also built-in, to maintain network stability when, and immediately after, networks are briefly overloaded, said the stockist.

The power input accommodates 12, 24 or 48Vdc.

“The EDS-4000 range is the first IEC 62443-4-2 compliant industrial Ethernet switch, making it a choice for cybersecurity and safeguarding against malicious activity,” said Impulse.

Data rate is 10 or 100Mbit/s, increasing to Gbit/s speeds in EDS-G4000 types – as an example EDS-G4014 has eight RJ45 10/100/1000BaseT(X) ports, four 100/1000/2500BaseSFP ports and two 1000/2500BaseSFP ports.

Power options are 9.6 to 60Vdc, or higher-voltage types that can take 88 to 300Vdc or 85 to 264Vac. Lower voltage versions have a pair of power inputs that can be switched between for maintenance.

Impulse has been a official UK distributor of Moxa products since 2014, and is affiliated with the Moxa technical college to provide in-house training and first-line technical support.
